Greetings Mojo01,

I have sat looking at your portfolio and this image for about 20 minutes now trying to decide how best to help you with a critique. As there is very little information about what tools you are using for your piece this makes it extra difficult.

Please keep in mind my critiques never aim to hurt feelings. So do not take anything personally. (Yet I know how difficult this is for us artistic minds).

So to the work:
The image is obviously one of the main iconic photos from the Twilight series. From which of the two movies I really don't know as I am not a huge Twilight fan (*the room gasps*). So I get the benefit of looking at this image with unbiased eyes.

You mentioned in the description of this upload that this is "just an experiment for a project I might set for myself." I am curious what you meant by that. I think if I had a bit better insight to where you are heading with this image I might understand it better.

When I look closely at where you uploaded the image I see you put it into the Pop Art category.

Pop Art is loosely defined as - A style of art which seeks its inspiration from commercial art and items of mass culture (such as comic strips, popular foods and brand name packaging). So in this case you are successful in subject matter.

Now my real issue with this piece is this seems to be a couple of Photoshop filters slapped onto the image from Twilight? If this is the case then I have to say the Originality and Technique suffer. There really is nothing new here. You do not seem to be pushing anything avant-garde. I am no art major but I just do not see it. Photoshop is a wonderful tool and I too went through the "Gee this filter is neat but I have no idea what I really want to do with it" phase. This too shall pass.

The impact of this image is a strange one. When I first saw this image in the barrage of all the other images on the first page the first thing that jumped into my mind was not "wow" or "that is amazing" or even "Nice attempt". The first thing I noticed was the blood splatter that looked a lot like tomato sauce rather than blood. I realize this is an experimental piece so I can not honestly say what technique would work best for it, but at present I really do not think this works. (*expecting a big slap up side the head*) So in the end, does this image have impact? YES! But to me it is the wrong impact. You did stand out since I chose to critique this image over the others.

So what does it all mean?
My personal taste does not really like this image. My first reaction is "Why would you post it and why is it considered art?" And I do not really see it doing anything for your work as a whole. Perhaps when you do the other project and use this as a behind the scenes image I will understand more fully of where you are going with it.

From the rest of your gallery I can see you are enjoying the experimental end of your work and I applaud you for it and I hope you are receiving as much personal satisfaction as I remember when I first started my long journey down the digital art road. (Of which I am far from complete I assure you)

Do not let my words discourage you. Read them and absorb what you want then discard the rest if you need to. Use DA as a tool to grow! You will never go wrong.

Thank you for sharing.

JE.
